WHEN MAY PATIENT INFORMATION BE SHARED?
CareConnect HIE may only facilitate the sharing and accessing of a patient’s personal information through the HIE if the patient has provided valid consent to the participating hospital to do so. Without this consent, the patient’s information will not be shared and will not be accessible to those healthcare providers who treat them.

Patients may choose to withdraw their consent at any time such that their information will no longer be shared.

Electronic Health Iinformation Exchange (HIE) is the exchange of electronic data between data providers and authorized users. It enables clinicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers to access a patient’s vital medical information when appropriate. The HIE is therefore a hub through which information flows from one authorised user to another.

CareConnect is a registered non-profit company (NPC), founded collectively by private healthcare funders and healthcare providers for the benefit of patients and other stakeholders within the South African health system.
