Health data sharing, now more than ever, is a crucial aspect of effective healthcare and benefits everyone from individuals to healthcare systems and entire populations.

CareConnect HIE was launched in April 2022, and is South Africa’s first industry-wide Health Information Exchange (HIE). The CareConnect HIE links providers, patients, funders and health facilities through a Unified Care Record that delivers a consolidated set of up-to-date, real time, consented patient information to authorised users.

Current participants include hospitals and medical scheme administrators, with additional participants in the pipeline.

Electronic Health Iinformation Exchange (HIE) is the exchange of electronic data between data providers and authorized users. It enables clinicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers to access a patient’s vital medical information when appropriate. The HIE is therefore a hub through which information flows from one authorised user to another.

CareConnect HIE

CareConnect is a registered non-profit company (NPC), founded collectively by private healthcare funders and healthcare providers for the benefit of patients and other stakeholders within the South African health system.
